15 Movies That Will Always Stay With You

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

I've been tagged by several people to do this list, I wasn't really paying attention albeit rather wanting to start with my own immediately. I just thought it's a list I do not want to post on Facebook because each movie deserve its own justification and introduction. In this post, I want to encourage anyone who will read this post to share their own list as well. And tag me if you ever do so I get to explore your list too!
Before I begin this cruel torture, I want to mention that I have more than 15 on this list. These are the ones that immediately came to mind upon being challenged to do the list. Please note that I have personal reasons for putting these movies in here and not all of them are good and some of them are personal. Oh, and a quick side note, they are in no particular order and this one is text-heavy. You can quit reading if you want. Quitter, loljk!
A Serbian Film
This film will always stay with me because no matter how hard I try to forget it, it keeps haunting me. I don't hate the person who suggested this movie to me, because somehow, it opens a part of me to the different cruelties of this world. It may have been presented in an odd, grotesque and bilious way, but it does have a point. Things like this do happen.

A Clockwork Orange
The concept is not as sick as A Serbian Film but it depicts a lot of disturbing scenes on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs and other social, political and economic subjects. It's such a brilliant movie if you put aside the uncomfortable repulsiveness of the lead actors. I'm used to that kind of violence since most of the TV shows I watch involves a lot of it, but I'm sure not everyone will be comfortable with it. Stanley Kubrick did such an amazing job with this film, hats off. Oh, and it also reminds me of Panic! At The Disco's I Write Sins Not Tragedies.

Because Audrey Tautou. It touches a lot of topics that I'm very concerned with, such as how the upbringing of one's parents can have such a great impact on the child. Which is one of the major reasons I don't want to have a child. Not that my parents didn't raise me well, just that, I don't think I'm capable of raising one on my own. Going back, I like how it's set in Paris and she was able to find something to be happy about despite the kind of childhood that she had. I wish I can be like that some days. Oh, and by the way, she has another amazing movie entitled 'La Delicatesse', please do yourself a favor and watch it. (Pardon the lack of French accents, too lazy to google how to put them in.)

American Beauty
I watched this when I was in Elementary, I think. We weren't allowed to watch TV during weekdays so I slaved away during weekends to discover things on Cable TV. And this is one of the movies that really caught my attention. Not because it's sexual, but because of the concept of older guys being infatuated with younger women--like as-young-as-their-daughters young. I used to think maybe that's how it was in other countries. My country is extremely conservative so this was a shocker for me. I watched the movie again when I was older and I came to realize how it illustrates one's subjective perspective on happiness and satisfaction. Plus, Mena Suvari and Kevin Spacey, how can I not include it on this list?

The American Pie Series
By that I mean THE original American Pie Series, not the American Pie Presents series. I have a certain affinity for Western films that supposedly picture how things are in High school or College. I used to think my best friend's and I will have the same pact, but being in a Catholic School my whole life basically made that impossible for us. It was my manifesto until College, where I learned that hooking up with someone isn't as easy, especially when emotions are involved. I still love it, nonetheless.

The Blair Witch Project
Am I the only one who was fooled by this "documentary"? I did regret watching this for a while when I was younger, because I watched it alone. Back then, every Friday, we get to pick 2 movies to watch over the weekend. The cover seemed interesting so we got it. That Saturday night though, my sister fell asleep so I watched it alone. I remember putting it on mute every now and then because I was horrified. Why didn't I stop watching, you ask? I wanted closure, I wanted to know what would happen until the end. I was so sold by this that I felt bad for them, and even prayed for their souls. Then I was watching MTV one day, and there they were, accepting some sort of award and I'm like, l$^$%^&! It's not real. So there, quite unforgettable if I may say.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
The boyfriend didn't want to watch this with me because it seemed dark, but I didn't think it was scary. I don't know why I'm drawn to such movies but there's always this feeling of wanting to know what happened in that house or what happened to him, because they always have that premise. It's one of the best horror films I've watched because of the turn of events and the reason behind it.

The Hangover Series
I love this movie so much I'm putting two GIFs instead of one, lol! Just like how I see American Pie, I have this deluded sense of reality when it comes to movies. I feel as if they're going to happen to me once I get to that age or once I achieve that milestone. That's what Hangover for me is, minus the getting drugged part, of course. Their chemistry just works for me, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. I also watched this movie a gazillion times when I was unemployed in 2009 and pretty much memorized every line. And, duh, Bradley Cooper? I would like to say I was the first one to discover that he's going to be hot as fvck but I'm pretty sure I'm not. Ha! And Ken fvcking Jeong is an extremely hilarious guy, how can I even begin to forget this movie? No, I just can't.

PS Zach Galifianakis, I didn't forget you. You awesome, sexy motherfucker!

Juno
Because it was a movie about my ultimate fear--getting pregnant out of wedlock. By now you must have realized how much influence my school and my community has on me. Our house is about 20 steps away from the church, and everyday we had to pray and talk to God about our sins and ask for forgiveness, etc. Pre-marital sex was big no-no, so you can only imagine how people who got pregnant out of wedlock were perceived. This movie though, it was a huge eye-opener. Because I realized it's possible to make mistakes, and people who love you will still be there for you no matter what. There was also this girl in my college class who had to go through the same thing, and she was a cool 'Juno' mom. She also turned out fine, and so did her son.

Little Miss Sunshine
Because, Abigail Breslin, loljk! But really, Abigail Breslin is utterly adorable in this movie I just want to give her a hug. She's all grown up now but I still want to give her a hug. *wink* This movie, at least for me, was about winning, losing, giving and getting support from your family and the occasional suicide. But more than anything, it is about how each family has their own niceties and oddities, yet at the end of the day, they're there--no matter what. I love seeing different family dynamics on film, I may not have the best family out there but I know we're here for each other. Cheesy much? But it is true!

Love in the Time of Cholera
I don't know what draws me towards sad and tragic stories, not just love stories in particular. Before I continue, I don't know what is with Javier Bardem but I find him extremely appealing. He is not that good-looking in my own standards, but, there's something I can't quite pinpoint. He exhibits that appeal so much in this movie that you're drawn into his love story without you even knowing it. I watched this movie when I was in college and it sort of made me believe that love does last, but no matter how long-lasting that love is, it always has an end.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Aside from the odd romance between Michael Cera and Kat Dennings (Yihee!), I'm extremely fond of the soundtrack! It's a treasure trove of amazing tracks. I've been listening to the whole soundtrack for a few years now and I still get giddy every time. I remember using The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" as my cellphone ring tone for some time because Nick had the same one. And I highly associated Nick with his character in Juno which made me like the movie all the more. Well, tbh, Michael Cera pretty much has the same type of character in every movie. Still love him!

The Silence of the Lambs
We're usually not allowed to read books with such nature but my Grammy left her copy at home and I was too curious not to read it. The movie wasn't exactly how I imagined everything to be, which is a good thing. This may well be the movie that piqued my interest in Crime drama. I followed the whole Hannibal's whole shebang until Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. I also thought Jodi Foster and Anthony Hopkins were quite marvelous in this movie.

Stranger Than Fiction
There's always something extra special with comedians when they try to do serious roles, and it's not totally a bad thing. I've watched a couple of my favorite actors do something far from what they're known for and they don't work all the time. I never expected such a performance from Will Ferrell but I'm glad it worked, I also adore the tremendous amount of visuals throughout the movie, it reminds me of Sherlock. Or the other way around.

Sybil
This, by far, is the longest movie I've watched so far. The 1976 version, at least. I'm very fond of the human mind and how far one can go if it's utilized fully--much like how compartmentalization is. Which is what happens in this movie. It also has s a bit of touch on Feminism and how we, as a society, shouldn't dismiss psychological problems just because we think they're not real.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I love this movie because it gave me a glimpse of how my life could become when I grow old. It presented several facets of how things will eventually turn out based on how you act now, which is very logical, come to think of it. But the fact that you kind of have an idea how it will play out, that's a bit daunting--though presented in a candid manner throughout movie. It also remind me of Last Vegas, another movie lorded by old but seasoned actors and actresses who did such stellar performances.

The Diving Bell and The Butterfly
The original title of the movie is Le Scaphandre Et Le Papillon, and it's the true story of Elle's previous editor, Jean-Dominique Bauby. This movie struck me right into my heart because it was a detailed narration of what happened to this guy, like real events from a memoir he wrote using his left eye--the only part of his body that wasn't paralyzed. Movies like this make me wonder if someone would visit me should I experience the same thing, it's just...heartbreaking.

The Lifeguard
My life is far from Kristen Bell's character in the movie, but we have such similar dilemmas in life. Not that I was an achiever when I was younger, but I'm at a halt. I haven't achieved much in life and I guess that's where all my personal issues are coming from, I don't feel like doing what I've been doing--but I also don't know what I want to do. And this quote, "I'm allowed to be confused and stumble once in a while." Regardless if we did well in school or not, I think we're all allowed to make mistakes, take a breath and just figure out what we really want to do. But just for the record, mine won't include having sex with an underaged boy, lol. Though I think I can consider someone younger.

The Lovely Bones
We're almost done with the list and I bet you wouldn't be surprised anymore that I have another crime drama up. If I were to put this movie on a more specific category, it's hipster crime drama. Well it was set in the 70s so you can just imagine how delightful the outfits are. The movie also depicts a somehow fancy view of what heaven is like, which is a debatable topic for me, but I liked the concept of 'heaven' in this movie.

The Toy Story Series
Because when I was younger, I did believe that toys can talk! At night, when I'm sleeping soundly and dreaming about weird things, my toys, especially my Barbie's, were having their own parties. I loved the first Toy Story movie, and I grew to love it even more as Toy Story 2 and 3 came about. I had really high hopes for the last movie because, how can Andy part with his toys? Is this really the end? It was heartbreaking, but it didn't disappoint. I still cry whenever I watch the last installment. I mean, how can a movie about toys teach grown-ups about a lot of things? Clap, clap.

Monsieur Lazhar
Suicide is a sensitive topic I've always explored, not because I wanted to do it but because I wanted to know why other people do it. This movie showed a lot of sensitivity and humor about the topic, and it involved discussion on self-expression, too. Others may see it as a bit monotonous especially after seeing the premise of the entire movie in the beginning but it just goes beyond that.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Woody Allen working on this masterpiece, how can I forget this? The story line is memorable on it's own, but I also won't forget how picturesque Barcelona is. And how simple things can be so much more complicated than they seem.

Wicker Park
Because this is the last you'll see of Josh Hartnett before he becomes and old, unatrractive dude. Loljk! I think he still looks okay, just that he didn't really age gracefully like George Clooney, y'know. Anyway, this is one of the first movies where I just wanted to kill the b*atch! I won't spoil things for you but if you haven't watched this yet, I highly suggest you do. This is one of those movies where there's just too much coincidence and you just sort of shout at the TV so that they can get it over with. Oh, and I also watched this with my cruel ex-boyfriend which is one of the major reasons why I'll never forget it.

And that's it for my list! I know that's too much text for one post, I'm sorry if my passion for these movies overwhelmed you. You're more than welcome to barf, lol! I just realized it took me over 2 weeks to finish the whole thing because I got sick trying to write intellectual stuff about my favorite movies, so I won't blame you if you don't get to finish the post too, haha!

I hope I was able to share some really good movies. I wish to know about your list, too! What are the top 15 movies that will always stay with you?
