Irvins-inspired Tofu Squares

Thursday, January 30, 2025

If you're chronically online, you've probably come across variations of this recipe, each with a different ingredient or sauce combination. Pick your favorite—it's all about personal preference. This recipe is a blend of those versions, adjusted to suit my palate. It's simple to make, perfect as a snack or a companion to your beer. The only cutting involved is for the tofu, onions, and green onions, and then you're good to go. As for the sauce, it requires no cooking—just a mix of pantry essentials you likely already have on hand. If you're ready, let's begin!

  1. Prepare Tofu: Pat tofu dry and cut into 1-inch cubes
  2. Coat Tofu: Coat in egg, then all-purpose flour, then egg and finally, breadcrumbs.
  3. Fry Tofu: Heat oil and fry tofu until golden brown (about 3–4 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
  4. Make Sauce: Mix mayonnaise, liver spread, seasoning, oyster sauce, calamansi, salt and pepper and chopped onion.

Tips:
  • For extra crunch, double-fry the tofu: fry once until light golden, let it cool, and fry again until crisp.
  • Add a sprinkle of chili powder or nori flakes for a unique twist.
  • Pair it with a refreshing drink like sago’t gulaman or calamansi juice for a full UST street food experience.
